Museums and attractions are usually closed as well, so plan accordingly.
July through August is the worst time to visit, unless you enjoy hordes of tourists, extreme temperatures and high prices. In the higher elevations of Athens geography, the temperatures are cooler, making it good for bikers and hikers.
In mid-September, the crowds thin and the temperature begins to fall, but it can still be rather hot. If beaches are not your top priority, this can be a nice time to visit.
By late October, most of the facilities begin to close, and flights and ferry services cut back. The cooler temperatures make Athens extremely pleasant.
The winter season of November through March is not necessarily a good time to visit unless you want to downhill ski. Some good hotels and tavernas are still open during this season, however, and prices are at their lowest.
